Can You Be Declined Life Insurance Because of Anxiety?

This morning I had a nurse come over to my house, take my medical history, draw blood, etc. all for the purpose of approving me for term life insurance. The man signing us up was a little concerned about my anxiety background as cause for being declined. He said that people with anxiety have a separate phone call made (which I am still waiting for) to discuss it in more detail.

My question is, since anxiety isn’t life threatening, why would you be declined for life insurance? Its not like having anxiety means you are suicidal. History of cancer? Understandable. Diabetes? Definitely a red flag. But anxiety? Come on!

So I am waiting to hear the verdict. If I get declined I will be very shocked. Heaven forbid anyone gets a bugbite because that might be next on the list of potential life threatening illnesses or diseases to decline insurance for!

I've handled hundreds of cases where people with a history of anxiety qualify for insurance. If they make you pay more based on your anxiety history then you should find a different insurance company.

The only instances where you should be declined would be those where a history of risky behavior or suicidal thoughts are present.

Hi Aimée!

I know NOTHING about insurance, but I DO know that suffering from anxiety on a long-term basis affects your physical health. You can check this out on various websites, and here is one of them....

And there are the well documented mental health issues around long-term anxiety - the most common of which is depression.

I suppose it would not be surprising if an insurance company would want more info about a prospective client's anxiety condition.

I really hope you get this insurance. It is pretty sad to be treated differently because of your anxiety. Good luck!

I was originally denied, through my work, for extra life insurance. I fought it and won. They denied me because I had been to therapy for anxiety. But my therapist wrote them a letter and they reversed the decision. Maybe she told them I was no where near suicidal. I hope yours is approved.

You might want to look at getting insurance bonds to ensure your investment is safe. Have a word with your solicitor about getting bonded. I've done so in the past and decided to use JW Surety.

I guess the views of your doctor as well as your medical certificates play a key role. If your medical documents reflect that you're not prone to suicidal risks then there's no reason why a carrier should deny coverage to you.

I'd also be curious to know if doctors will ever look at 'depression' as a cause for heart diseases or other chronic diseases. If that's not a possibility, then there's no point in denying life insurance coverage to someone who's suffering from anxiety.

I was recently denied life insurance because my medical records state I drink socially, I take meds for anxiety. I also see a neurologist for migraines. They said that was not the reason, that the anxiety & that I consume alcohol are the reasons they denied me...
